Today i went to see my first pyramid. The city of Teotihuacan close to Mexico city was one of the most advanced cities of the pre colombian civilizations. As many of these civilizations it ended with not much of an explanation. The site is undescribeable so i’m posting a shot i took. I was in one of the pyramids called moon and the shot shows the avenue of the dead and the bigger pyramid, the sun. The power of this site is amazing and you can’t help but wonder what happened to the people who lived there. They were very advanced. They lived there from 400 bc to 700 ad and since them we hed no major evolution on astronomy for an example. You may say that we do have many great discoveries in modern astronomy but think about it. They left us the 365 days year with twelve months and four seasons. They knew 20 centuries ago the earth was round and not the center of the universe. They used soap produced by mexican cactus with the same characteristics of our soap and they did it almost twenty centuries before we invented our soap. Like those there are many examples of their power. Even so they disappeared with no clues left behind. The strange thing is that nothing written was ever found so we don’t even know what was the language used by them. They could be extra terrestrials like those i posted a while ago here but that’s not the subject here. What is bothering me is how can a society like that just fade with no traces. Will our society do the same eventually? Societies are like bodies and have a “life” and a “death”. You can have a younger or older society but how to know as a man knows his life is ending that a society is about do die? As societies have a much longer life spam than men we can’t precise how long a society will live. There are signs like climate change and the diminishing of the natural resources. So i think about our society. How old is it? Is it close to it’s end? Will our story survive if we fade like dinosaurs? It overwhelming to be in a place like Teotihuacan thinking about these subjects that are so up to date with the conversations we have today about our future. Did those guys back then imagine nothing could destroy them? Resources were endless? Are we doing these same mistakes headed to the same fate? It’s really important to learn all we can about history so we can grasp how fragile our life in earth is. It’s important to give real value to the risks we take and help ensure our children’s future and their children’s future as well. Time to wake up!!
Hey mate, couldn’t find the pic you described. Did you mention abt the sand castle?

Sorry friend!!! I did hit publish by mistake!!! I’m finishing writing the post… it will be on in 20 mins!!!
I agree with the idea that societies are almost organic and have lives, a birth and a death. In fact, I think I believe pretty much everything does. Only the foolishness of man seems to transcend everything.
I would love so very much to see this place. Yet another location to add to my places-i-dream-of-visiting-diary. Where will I ever have find the time and money.
It’s a great place to visit. Really makes you wonder…The size of these pyramids are too impressive. It makes you wonder about many things. Wish you get the resources to go there soon. I’d love to see how the place would impact your next gods!!!
I live in the US Southwest, and we have quite a few ruins here as well. I used to live at the base of Mesa Verde, site of a pretty spectacular dwelling. The people lived there then just disappeared. Great post, well put.
Thank you my friend! It seams you lived in many places. That’s awesome. What i digg the most in life is knowledge. I would love to live in many different places… Cheers.
I lived in Mexico for three years as an ex-pat – loved loved loved it. And remember climbing the steps to gaze across at the Temple of the Moon. Have a great visit. It’s one of my favorite cities in the world.
Ex pat Janet? In mexico? Sounds as great as Thelma & Louise…Seriously i can tell you it’s also on the top of my list!!! Very dry though…Don’t know if i could live here…

Giuliano, I wrote a screenplay called DreamWarror about four young people, two American and two Mexican, who have to save the world from another disasterous earthquake (i.e. the end of civilization) by fighting the old god Huitzliopochti – who was the god of war, death, and carnage and who wants to return. I would love to get it produced and I would also love to have a new image of Mexico (other than drug wars) out into the world – any interest? Or do you know someone who might? J.
Hi Janet!!! I gotta thank you so much for proposing. It’s really an honor. The thing is as i’m a Brasilian and with not many feature works i feel really compeled to talk about the culture of my country. As you said it yourself i would love to bring a new image of Brasil (other than drug wars and carnival) out into the world. What i can do is send it to a friend. He is from a US studio and they probably have a closer interest in the mexican culture. Glad to hear you write screenplays!!! We need writers so much!!! Writing screenplays is your thing or all kinds of writing???

probably easier to communicate or send ms. that way. There’s a dot between janet and sunderland.
Yes, I know you are Brasillian. I’ve had a love affair with Brazillian films for oh, so many years – although now my familiarity is a little dated. I’ve probably seen every Sonja Braga film made – and for years Brazil had a really classic run of cinema. I can’t for sure remember the name of the film – nosotros no se come frijolles – was that it? The final scene was the father and mother sitting at the kitchen table sorting beans. And another scene I have in my memory of this little carnival show traveling the back country. And I’ve read a lot of Brazillian literature. But anyway, I discovered Brazillian films when I lived in New York – and after that when I lived in Mexico. I do all kinds of writing – screen plays from the days when I did a lot of acting; poetry – from forever – creative nonfiction – fiction. Not comic strips. At least not yet! Email me at above address and we’ll talk. Thanks for being willing to contact your friend for me.
Great post!
Thank you!!!
