I grew up in a world where fat people are seen like big children who can’t control them selves and are not very serious. This is part af a text i read on the web: “fat people piss me off with their thing about losing weight but they don’t do a damn thing about it . They always bitch about it all the time.” (http://www.angry.net/people/f/fat_people.htm) . Well… Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems. Fifteen percent of the world is obese right now and two hundred thousand dies in the U.S. every year now forgetting it’s s the leading preventable cause of death worldwide, with increasing prevalence in adults and children, and authorities view it as one of the most serious public health problems of the 21st century. All this statistics are frightening because most people still don’t get it. Obesity is like any other kind of vice and it should be treated as one but it’s not. Why we still don’t have the treatment for the food industry as severe as the treatment for tobacco’s industry? I’m not saying tobacco executives are nicer than food executives. Actually they are almost the same companies that migrated from one thing to the other. Big Groups. That’s why surgeon general don’t show up in Mc Donalds commercials. Of course that’s not the only reason. Another big reason is the kind of culture we live today where everybody is so selfish that we can see all this people dying and at the same time have comments like the ones in the website i posted here. Nobody is ignorant about the size of this problem so that only proves how uninterested in other people’s lives most are. It’s much easier to make fun and find an excuse to stay far from this issue. Because that’s a real issue and people need courage to face it. It’s as demanding as any other kind of drug addiction and to clean someone from this problem is a big ordeal so today it is a much bigger social problem than drugs and alcohol and soon will become bigger than tobacco which is the biggest killer of them all. There were 23,199 alcohol induced deaths in 2007 and 443,000 deaths attributable to tobacco. Approximately 190,000 deaths were caused by obesity only in the U.S. The 2009 swine flu killed 10,000 americans and it was news all over the country. It’s sad but the truth is that most people are only willing to fight things that concerns then directly. Good luck fat folks. Wake up and fight for your lives because nobody gives a damn about it.
