Who’s afraid of the tube?? Firstly what does it mean these days?? When i was a kid there was this fear of television. It could ruin your brains if you spent too much time in front of it. Even so all the kids came back from school and stayed all day long watching cartoons and eating on the couch in front of the Tv. My mom used to say Tv rays could give cancer. Now i know that the truth is that Tv is a time waste and it really can ruin your life but just if you spend all of it watching your favorite shows. By the way people that watches too much Tv don’t have favorite shows. They just use Tv for hypnosis. They turn off the world outside and get inside the message on TV. That way everything will be alright. Today we are facing different times with different problems. Tv is less used than before but just because kids found another much more addictive tube. With the internet we changed our lifestyle so fast that in fifteen years the time of exposure dropped to half on Tv and in other hand now it’s accepted for a kid to spend eight hours on the internet. Twenty years ago if the internet pioneers knew this they would probably decide not to have kids but today it’s normal. Computers are really very useful. Many things we had to do in the past are resolved in computers with much less effort and also things that where not possible now are piece of cake. Well… That’s the problem. I worked with post production in Tv for ten years in a major time of change for post houses. In the middle of the nineties solutions that would cost two million dollars would cost twenty thousand ten years after that. All the game changed and that’s awesome but that’s kinda oversimplifying. In order to completely change in these ten years it had thousands of small changes in the meantime. What we professionals learned with this new computer wave it that we would better ourselves during whole years but in the end we were not better. We were just updated. So many softwares with so many versions. All of them great tools that all of us would need to learn and don’t get me wrong. I love tool. All people from post production are gadgets maniacs but the point is: if you are doing art direction in post for an example we need to learn art and not software. An editor have to learn the art of editing and not the next version of final cut. What happens with this is that the other and more important characteristics of the profession get seconded by this need to update!
That’s the reason art direction is getting more and more shallow in most places. And if we apply this concern in kids education and lives we will end up understanding computers are taking so much of their time that they may end up living less experiences in this real world outside the tube and any kind of wisdom comes from experience and living. So now guess what: i’m afraid of having kids!

Yesterday as a good Brasilian i had to give a look at the “desfile de escolas de samba” which is the official parade of the samba “schools” here in Brasil. The most important one is in Rio sunday (today) and monday (tomorrow). To be honest i’m not the biggest lover of carnival. For those who doesn’t know it’s a holiday here where the whole country stops from saturday till wednesday to party. Imagine you guys a hole country having fun. Sounds good but it would be even better if we were a rich country. The tradition of carnival comes from catholic church and it’s just before lent. Funny because there is a lot of nudity and it’s very carnal. That just sounds like the way our old church loves it. A little party and afterwords many sinners willing to pay their dues. In Brasil it’s a very important party. People use to say the year really starts just after it. That is mainly because it’s summer and vacations here before the festivities but also people are slower in the job before carnival begins. In the last decades it really turned into a party for tourists mainly because the natives have no money to attend. They put on the show but they don’t participate as much as they would like. A side effect is that the prices are really high. Yesterday i was invited but a place like i was could cost more that 500 US easily. As it was supposed to be a popular party each year it gets richer but less interesting and less artistic. The real artists are being banned from the place by people with more money as most of the cultural venues in the world. It was really fun to watch and it’s like going to the games. twelve samba schools with more than three thousand people each make their shows and the audience always have their preferred “team”. Next week they will choose the winner from this year and the two lower scores will go down one level like in pro sports and next year they will “play” on second division. The parade is also a great place for celebrities to show up on national Tv since it’s aired full length (one hour and a half each school times twelve in São Paulo and the same in Rio) which is a lot of air time. Many people turn into celebrities in one carnival alone. Sometimes just a pair of boobs well exposed is enough to call the attention of twenty million viewer. Now there’s something that tops all of this nonsense i just described. samba. The music and the rhythm. No way you can just listen to it. You dance it. It’s so primitive to our instincts that you just can’t help it. You dance it. If you know how to you do it beautifully. If you don’t you just make a fool of your self but nobody cares. The music is probably the part of the tradition that still is alive and that’s why is so powerful…Sound fun right? Some pictures then…

When i was young to skip a class and go to the mall would mean i was brave enough to challenge the authorities and to do as i pleased. It was a time for fun and for doing stuff we were usually not allowed. Jumping over the school walls and taking the bus hiding from the school’s personel. Drinking pops and eating candies in the movies. Fooling around and talking about grown people ways of life. I remember we used to look at the offices inside buildings across the plaza. I wanted to be one of those guys in meetings deciding great things. It was so amazing even today at 42 i still remember those moments. Today is a thursday much colder and pale than it should be since it’s still summer here. As my work is all done and it took until three in the morning to finish i decided to skip work in the morning. To have the morning free to do whatever i like. For a really funny unknown reason i didn’t go to the movies or had candies. I stayed at home and it’s different when you are not doing something forbidden. To skip work is almost the opposite of skipping classes. I’m really curious and interested in what’s going on in work and i’m calling people. I’m doing stuff that i needed and didn’t find time to as separating old T’s to give away and organize my documents. What a bore!!! I realized that what we were searching for when we skipped those classes was to be empowered. To be adults with a saying about what we want and where we wanna go and who we wanna be. That’s why i was so fascinated looking at those men in meetings because now i’m one of them and i really don’t want to be the kid in school. Lucky enough i’m exactly where i want… well…not today… i wanted to be at the office doing stuff.
