Today we know many aspects of our history and why did we developed some features and abilities. Scientists learn everyday how we evolve to fit survival and progress. The bald guys are genetically more evolved than the hairy guys and that’s because now we have roofs over our head and we don’t need hair to protect our skin. In other areas like food supply and the means to get it we evolved too fast and our bodies didn’t have time enough to adjust. We got fat because it’s easier today to get food. Of course a kid growing in a poor area in Africa would disagree but mostly today is much easier. Our bodies are getting used to more dangerous viruses and bacteria. But things are changing faster and faster and that makes the gap between our biological evolution and our habitat evolution bigger and bigger. An example of that is the solar protection factor we are using. In the 60’s that didn’t even exist. I remember in the 70’s my mom using tanning lotion with no protection and lying at the sun at noon. Today if i do that i’ll use solar protection factor 45. In twenty years it’ll get to more than a hundred just to go to work. Our bodies didn’t have the time to adjust to that. I wonder what will happen in the next hundred years. Things are changing really fast. I remember when i spent 5 hours on the internet in the 90’s. My dad told me i was crazy and i felt really dizzy. Today most people as myself use to spend more than 5 hours a day doing things online. And we are getting fatter and lazy. I’m lucky for not being really good in predictions. I would not sleep thinking about what we will look like in a hundred years. I hope this curve changes and things get a little more healthy.

There’s this kinda old concept. The idea is that if you try the same operation in a computer many times eventually this operation will have a different result. It’s really hard to understand how does that happens but it does. There’s actually no logical explanation. There’s only a theory and a legend. The theory says that it is an error very possible in a statistic point of view. Legend says that it is a little demonstration of life. Some say life is no more than complexity and what we can just feel but can’t explain in our mind is no different than any other connection in this universe. It’s just a very complex one. So if computers can get complex enough they will be able to fool themselves into believing they are living creatures with purpose and spirit. Atoms got together into molecules. Molecules into cells. Cells into tissues. Tissues into organs. Organs into bodies. Each of these steps with gazilions of lesser results but a couple of good possibilities waiting to find other good possibilities. When everything goes well we have what is called evolution. That can happen with any kind of system from organic bodies like us to eletronic structures like computers. Some believe that little achievements can have great impact and be called evolutionary. We don’t know yet which event can be called evolutionary but computers are around only for 60 years or so. We can imagine that as the phase of atoms and cells. In human evolution that took millions of years but probably in computers it will take much less. So maybe in our lifetime we will witness cells being created or even tissue. Maybe the next time your computer behave in a strange way it’s not just a failure. It’s a sign of life.

I live in a very big city and as any other very big city the number of cars is much higher than i should be. I was going to work today morning and i witnessed a scene that is so common it’s scary. There was no trafic light in this smal street and a car driven by a woman in front of me was trying to turn right into the larger street. His was having a hard time partly because she probably didn’t drive that well and partly because that larger street was really crowded. After some time trying she decide to go for it cutting a bus but with a reasonable distance. The guy driving the bus had at least 30 feet to stop and he was a about ten mph at the most. Even so he continued moving forcing the car on his left to move out of the way. I saw his face and really wandered. It there was no law and no restrains of any kind would he hit the woman’s car. I think maybe he would. I see that kind o attitude in many occasions. The only thing keeping him from doing it is the punishment. How many people didn’t get into fights on even committed crimes just because of the punishment? That makes me wonder. I think of our selves as sophisticated beings on the top of the evolution chain. With invented cures for our selves and the most amazing technology. We are able to love and to tell histories of love. How can we accept that there’s is no moral judgement balancing our everyday activities ?The fact is some people still lack moral sense and ethics and the only thing keeping them in control is the law and the regulations. Common sense is not in place here. That show something is wrong with the model. People are too stressed by this amount of events called modern life and some are not dealing with it in a healthy way. Why are we so late and worried? So repressed? So intensely caged that when there’s a chance we forget our place and turn into the animals that can only relate to instincts? I’ll stop and think twice next time i get angry. I hope you all do the same.
