From the wiki “Moral character or character is an evaluation of a particular individual’s durable moral qualities. The concept of character can imply a variety of attributes including the existence or lack of virtues such as integrity, courage, fortitude, honesty, and loyalty, or of good behaviors or habits.”

I see shows like “SuperNanny” and i really get shocked. I’m getting old i know but the way kids are usually educated these days is really poor and even alarming. There’s a reason for criminals being criminals and this begins inside the family. I know that character can be genentic but not always. Brothers can have very different characters but then again the education is not the same even inside the same family. Right and wrong are concepts that our parents teach us and i can see no teaching in some families these days. That makes me worried for the future of these kids that will grow up to be people with a bad character and that’s not their falt. It’s the parent’s falt. I believe the lack of limits is one of the worst problems and things like depression are starting to grow in kids with just 8 to 10 years old. They seam to be unable to find satisfaction on life and they are still being taught that they should seek happiness without limits. It should be that simple but humans don’t know how to live only in happiness. I believe limits are good and to learn the difference between right and wrong is basic for a child to grow with character. Some think that by doing this you are taking the liberty of choice of these kids and that’s wrong but i really don’t buy it. We always need some kind of model because we start knowing nothing. So if parents decide not to be models kids will search it somewhere else and it’s not always that this search will end with a good choice.

Who’s afraid of the tube?? Firstly what does it mean these days?? When i was a kid there was this fear of television. It could ruin your brains if you spent too much time in front of it. Even so all the kids came back from school and stayed all day long watching cartoons and eating on the couch in front of the Tv. My mom used to say Tv rays could give cancer. Now i know that the truth is that Tv is a time waste and it really can ruin your life but just if you spend all of it watching your favorite shows. By the way people that watches too much Tv don’t have favorite shows. They just use Tv for hypnosis. They turn off the world outside and get inside the message on TV. That way everything will be alright. Today we are facing different times with different problems. Tv is less used than before but just because kids found another much more addictive tube. With the internet we changed our lifestyle so fast that in fifteen years the time of exposure dropped to half on Tv and in other hand now it’s accepted for a kid to spend eight hours on the internet. Twenty years ago if the internet pioneers knew this they would probably decide not to have kids but today it’s normal. Computers are really very useful. Many things we had to do in the past are resolved in computers with much less effort and also things that where not possible now are piece of cake. Well… That’s the problem. I worked with post production in Tv for ten years in a major time of change for post houses. In the middle of the nineties solutions that would cost two million dollars would cost twenty thousand ten years after that. All the game changed and that’s awesome but that’s kinda oversimplifying. In order to completely change in these ten years it had thousands of small changes in the meantime. What we professionals learned with this new computer wave it that we would better ourselves during whole years but in the end we were not better. We were just updated. So many softwares with so many versions. All of them great tools that all of us would need to learn and don’t get me wrong. I love tool. All people from post production are gadgets maniacs but the point is: if you are doing art direction in post for an example we need to learn art and not software. An editor have to learn the art of editing and not the next version of final cut. What happens with this is that the other and more important characteristics of the profession get seconded by this need to update!
That’s the reason art direction is getting more and more shallow in most places. And if we apply this concern in kids education and lives we will end up understanding computers are taking so much of their time that they may end up living less experiences in this real world outside the tube and any kind of wisdom comes from experience and living. So now guess what: i’m afraid of having kids!

I was watching this show by Oliver where he tries to change food habits inside schools in the US. I already wrote about the food issue but i think he does a much better job. The idea of going to schools and giving the kids the correct kind of food can make all the difference. The interesting thing in the show is the amount of negative response he gets trying to put his ideas in action. People are really upset when he arrives into school’s kitchens. The kooks were probably in a confortable position for a long time and the food they served was the same for a long time. I would hate for a foreigner to arrive in my kitchen and start telling me what to do but then i watched the whole show i got pretty scared about some facts. I saw five years old kids having pizza for breakfast and that was totally for real. I saw how they do mash potatoes that has a lot of stuff but potatoes in the mix cooks receive from big factories. Fries are the most common food for teens in schools and people gets really annoyed when they are asked to change the menu in their schools. Anyway it’s probably a major show and people in america knows all this but for me here in Brasil it was a shock. Everybody talks about the way people eats in the US but i never knew it started at school. I know as a kid my mom always annoyed me about eating my salad and veggies and fruits. Just giving us pops on weekends and never giving desert for the kid that didn’t finish the meal. I guessed it was the same all around and we as individuals chose the wrong way of eating by ourselves. that’s what impressed me a lot. With all the info about how junk food can kill people from heart deseases, cancer, diabetes and other how parents accepts that their kids get used to eat junk in their schools which is the place they were supposed to take their education from. That’s a really wrong eating education and it’s very understandable why the eating disorders are so popular nowadays. I asked some moms my age and it seams this is not an Us issue but a global one. Looks like today everyone is obligated to pursue joy and happiness with no limits and to use any kind of restrain in this kind of education can be really unpopular. So children eat much more junk food because they want it and the power of “wanting” something these days and the right to receive what we want is so valued that nobody will discuss. If you want it you get it and it doesn’t matter if it’s bad for you or if you would need to learn better to decide. All of that has to do with the need for growing consumption our society have so it’s kinda hard to believe that’s going to change. What i see is a really obese future to all of us among other things.
