I dont wanna be a party pooper but i really want to learn other folk’s opinions over the topics that are presented to us on daily basis by the fellows at daily post. It’s not that all ideas are bad or anything. Maybe just having the same ideas for everybody is not what writing is supposed to be. As i understand we are here to tell and read tales from our own experience and our visions of the world. Choosing themes is like turning writing into a task. I know for some maybe it’s an incentive to keep writing everyday but writing everyday is only good if your have stuff to write everyday. I signed up for this which is already a task. The “postaday2011” for me is good for discipline but already sometimes makes me feel like i’m only doing it for the task. It’s clear to me and to the readers. In these days i also gave my best but the need to write and the spark to do so was not there. I can see that in my statistics. Viewers drop to half at least. It means maybe the message i’m delivering is not that important anymore. I’ll keep doing the postaday thing but i’ll never be able to work with the topics. I tried but those were not very good posts. For those who likes the ideas posted on the daily post i can only say that i admire and respect you guys. I’m just not able to create that well on those handed subjects. Some of them are great and i can work with the photos ideas but themes like today’s “chocolate or vanilla” don’t help me much. I could write about it but instead i prefer to ask your opinions on this whole topic thing.

some of the suggestions were okay – I saved them to think about – but I haven’t found any that really sparked my interest except, like you, the photo ones. Although I haven’t posted for “home.” And now that I’m doing a daily Lenten reflection, I sort of have my “topic” if you will already there in the readings. I expect coming up with topic ideas every day is just as exhausting and leads to things like chocolate or vanilla. I often look outside when I’m beginning a post and take my cue from the natural world. So here’s our natural world – it’s supposed to snow again tonight!! And I have tulips breaking ground for spring and buds on the spirea. Ah well. It is, technically, still winter. Maybe just don’t fret about it.
You are totally right…we have to take our tales from our natural world otherwise we are not exchanging… by the way the scenario probably is amazing right now…I just love tulips and this waiting for the spring is really beautiful… We don’t have it here like you guys in temperate climate because flowers in the tropics “choose” when to break and more importantly we don’t have the cold and the brown leaves of the autumn… That creates a very special change in mood…see? that’s what our tales are for…exchanging…
I may have a slightly different point of view. I am thankful for the postaday2011 tag. I find that actively thinking about what to write everyday disciplines your mind to be more and more creative. Lately, I’ve found myself writing more than one post a day because there are things I want to share. I do think that there are days when I find myself grasping for something to write, and it’s during these days that I read the suggestions on the Daily Post. It’s just there to give us a nudge š It’s never really called itself anything more than an inspiration page.
Thank you for the point of view!!! I can say that i think that the tag is awesome. I was really talking only about the topics…. Now about those it’s nice to hear a different perspective. I really can’t find use for them and sometimes i even find them funny. But so other times for sure there’s food for imagination there… I just take my meals somewhere else : ) …
One aspect of the “postaday” vs “postaweek” is whether your blog is themed. If it is a general playground then the daily suggestions as to what your favourite colour is seem to work more in your favour. Otherwise, the weekly suggestions, or indeed the target of posting weekly, can be used to stimulate a larger body of work in a single posting. How long does it take to formulate a post? Thinking through one topic for ten minutes before posting may not fully convey your opinion whereas an hour here and ther over a week may well result a more compact, direct and succinct posting.
The thing here is that i really like to post everyday and i started working with the idea of using the tag and also the topics. I’m very happy with the tag as an incentive but after just i couple days i learned i wasn’t going the same way. Those topics didn’t help me at all. That’s how i stopped using topics.
The photo challenges work for me, gives me something to think about and time to look for the subject. The topics for the writing blog do not help me. I just interject whatever is on my mind when I post a new picture.
I thought the same when I saw “chocolate or vanilla”. I’ve been struggling to write a post every day for weeks now. Perhaps it’s long running blogger’s block?
For sure… But i prefer to struggle than talk about chocolate or vanilla. I guess it will get harder and harder… we still just wrote for 2 months…there are 10 left… lood luck to us all : )
Giulas,
Even though I write on my own topics, most of the time, I find the Daily Post topics very helpful as they give me ideas for future posts and even topics to explore in a creative way. For instance, the topic I wrote on today is based on yesterday’s prompt and I took an angle that explored it further.
The DP offers us prompts and we can use them or not, but better yet, they give us a forum to connect, write on topics we might never consider, and meet new friends. If you read my current post, you’ll see that I incorporated ideas from two DP prompts… We don’t have to write on the exact prompt question, we can write a variation of it… I have done so with my Tales/Stories; where I take a prompt and create a fable around it…. I have to say I do like knowing that I have the DP prompts to help me along. š

I signed up for postaweek because that way I can skip the daily prompts which I may not feel writing about. So when the DailyPost offers inspiration on what to write about and the inspiration is relevant to something I want to share, I take the challenge. I think there’s still flexibility in all this themed-posts. Besides, not everyone has the same take on the topic. Like Elizabeth wrote, we can write a variation of it. And so far, I am enjoying browsing through blogs reading about or seeing different bloggers’ interpretation of the theme.
It’s chocolate for me, by the way. And thanks for dropping by my blog.
Hummm… Seams like this is a polemic issue : )
many postaday-topics are silly and not worth an essay. you wrote:”just having the same ideas for everybody is not what writing is supposed to be…” yes, O.K.; I’ve written today on http://flickrcomments.wordpress.com/2011/03/14/expressionism/ and on http://flickrcomments.wordpress.com/2011/03/14/madness/ – both neither related to postaday2011 topics nor to actual news; maybe the topic “chocolate or vanilla” (not meant erotically) is for those, who have completely no idea what to write about. maybe they should stop to write …
Wow…great posts!!! I was going to ask you where do you research these photographs…awesome…
I have so much going on with my own topic, especially now that I’m writing daily about my year-long commitment to get outside every day, that I haven’t had to use the writing prompts more than once, maybe twice. I’m not very good with prompts most of the time, and I find some of them to be too personal (or would be too personal if I were to try to answer them as they sometimes lead in that direction). I do like that the suggestions are there to use if we want to. There have been times a suggestion from the DP helped me form a future post.
Like you, I prefer the photo challenges over the writing prompts. It gives me a good excuse to take more pictures. lol!
I’ve found them a little strange too, quite frankly. Some almost trivial. Admittedly they are no use to me, because my page is very themed. I did write about one once, simply because I thought it was a good idea to actually address the issue of whether I really did still smile at all (I do).
@Robin – I had to laugh about spending time on the computer (inside) to write about a commitment to get outside! š
@Simone – LOL – I thought of writing about chocolate AND vanilla! Mind you, if anyone had done the Landmark Forum, the question of chocolate or vanilla features quite strongly, but purely from the perspective of not needing a reason to want either.
@ Team Oyeniyi — lol! The irony of the situation has not escaped me. That’s the beauty of wireless and a laptop, though. I can post from outside, too. š
I must admit I had interpreted your “outside” as meaning moving around, meaning wireless was not an option! LOL Although I suppose with voice recognition software, we could all post and pound the pavement at the same time! Heavy breathing and all!
I think the challenge to follow the post a day prompts is to see if you can put a different slant on it than anyone else….
and if you can’t be original with the theme, write your own thing anyway.
Well… i can agree with you but that’s not the subject. I really think writing daily should bring diversity to the table. That’s why i write my daily posts and use the tag but with my own ideas. The subject here mostly is that some of these topics are becoming really lame. So it puts me in doubt on how much people that could share different experiences can benefit talking about “chocolate or vanilla”!!! And don’t get me wrong. That can be a great subject… You just need to read “Like water for chocolate” but someone writes this with their own reasons to do so…
I have done the haiku one…
oh is that what the whole postaday thing is. I’ve seen it on a few blogs.
Since I am not very well versed on the subject, I will just say this…the thought of posting every day makes me wilt, and I think I would NEED someone to give me a subject to write about because there is no way it would otherwise be sustainable. I am glad I am not part of it, I would have failed within a week and probably left wordpress. I do set myself a target of writing one entry per week, and I think having a deadline helps keep me motivated!
You always manage to write about thought provoking stuff and I am impressed by your posting stamina!
@Pseu I also did several… but one thing is finding one idea interesting and writing about it. The other thing is to be stuck with topics on daily basis for a whole year no matter how dumd they may sound. Some of those are really great! Others are not that great though….
